Gatekeeping in Math?  Illuminate Data Analysis Capability Helps Dispel the Myth of the Placement or Advancement Exam

Presenters: Gregory Duran & Ramaa Ravi, San Ramon Valley Unified School District

Description: San Ramon Valley Unified allows high school students to take non district math courses, geometry, algebra 2, and pre-calculus, over the summer in order to accelerate their math pathway.  At the conclusion of the summer course all students are required to take a district created readiness exam.  For the 2015-2016 school SRVUSD used Illuminate to organize the exam and correlate the exam results to other quantitative measurements such as SBAC and current course grades.  After analyzing the data it has become apparent that the readiness exam is a form of unnecessary gate keeping.  During the presentation we will show how Illuminate is a necessary component of the entire student advancement process.
