Enabling Text to Speech for Online Testing

This lesson will guide you through the process of setting up Text to Speech for an Online Test. This is a permission based feature that must be turned on in Admin Gear > Permissions > Assessments- 'Online Testing - Allow use of Text to Speech' before users can enable it for specific assessments.

Open the assessment you wish to enable text to speech for. (Assessments > List Assessments > Select Title)

1. Under Administration, select Online Testing.

2. Set up your Assessment Roster. For step by step instructions on setting up an Online Testing Roster, see the document 'Enable Assessment for Online Testing.'

Once the Assessment Roster is set up:

From your Online Testing-Assessment Rosters page (Assessment List > Assessment Title > Administration > Online Testing) :

1. Click on the person icon under students to access the students you wish to enable Text to Speech for.

2. Find the student(s) you wish to enable text to speech for. Click Actions and then Enable Text to Speech.

Note: Once enabled, to disable, click on Actions again.

When a student is viewing a question on a test enabled with Text to Speech, they will see the Text to Speech tool bar at the top of both the Passage and Question. Play is to play the passage or question, Pause will pause the reader, and Stop will stop the reader. Students can play the passage or question as many times as they wish.
